El Centro
offers a safe, indoor place where workers can gather each day as they
seek daily jobs. The staff identifies special skills of workers, enters
their information into a database, and advertises the availability of
day laborers throughout the community. Employers hire workers for temporary,
daily, and full-time employment. El Centro's staff helps employers identify
dependable workers, assists in resolving any difficulties between employer
and employee, and insures that all workers receive fair and agreed upon
wages with no fees to employers.

This program
aims to improve job skills and develop women’s leadership and
self-esteem through organizing, networking and the development of a
sense of community. Women in the project select their own officers,
design their own programs, determine the behavioral expectations, and
control their project budget and earned income. Established in February
of 2004, the women’s group is a team of middle-aged Spanish speaking
female immigrants who seek employment and seek numerous educational
programs.

El Centro
offers its workers a free, drop-in legal clinic. Students from the University
of Denver Law School, under the direction of a Law School faculty member,
and volunteers visit El Centro to offer legal assistance to workers
on a regular basis. The DU Law School students maintain an on-site legal
clinic office. Day laborers and low-income workers use our legal program
to receive advice, legal representation when problems arise (i.e. unpaid
wages), to learn about collective action and workers' rights.

A pioneering
team of national organizations and community-based worker centers
have
embarked on an asset-building project that takes an entrepreneurial
approach to meeting the financial service needs of low-wage workers,
particularly immigrants, and accruing economic benefits for low-income
communities. The store value card (SVC) project aims 1) to provide
inexpensive, reliable financial services and financial literacy education
to low-wage workers and 2) to build a sustainable income stream
for
worker centers and community-based organizations organizing and advocating
for greater economic and social well-being in low-income communities.
The card program is a way for low-income families to better manage
finances and transact securely and reliably at competitive prices;
the card consolidates
vital services such as check-cashing, bill-paying, and international
money transfer. It is also a way for community organizations to
develop
an income stream independent of foundations. The project will establish
revenue-sharing contracts with card vendors which multiplies the
benefits
of card usage, and worker centers can formalize and regularlize membership
dues collection through the card.
